Personality Style

Over the years I have often been asked what I believe causes conflict more than anything else. I am now convinced that personality differences are the primary cause of conflict during an estate settlement. Without understanding these differences, the process of keeping the peace and avoiding conflict will be much more difficult.

I came to this conclusion after having the fortunate opportunity to attend several talks on the personality styles given by Dr. Robert A. Rohm of Atlanta, Georgia. After hearing him, and then reading and studying several of his books, I began to discover how important and applicable this information is in all of our relationships. However, as I began the process of writing this book, I realized how beneficial this information would be to those who read The Settlement Game in anticipation of going through an estate settlement. I contacted Dr. Rohm and asked him to contribute information about the personality styles as they apply to the estate settlement process and he graciously agreed to do so.

The Settlement Game discusses these four personality styles with a brief outline of the traits of each, and also offers a few tips for communicating more effectively with each style. With just two basic questions, you can get an idea of which personality style you might be. This can also be applied to the basic traits you see in others, so that you can fairly well determine general personality styles of spouse, children, siblings, friends, or even acquaintances. Understanding them and then responding to other personality styles in a more appropriate way will probably take more study and then practice of improved and adjusted communication skills.
